Rolls-Royce Gets First Order For Vessels Based On Its Environship Concept

(RTTNews) - British engine firm Rolls-Royce Holdings Plc (RYCEY.PK: News,RR.L: News ) Monday said it has received an order to design and provide integrated power and propulsion systems for two Rolls-Royce NVC 405 cargo vessels purchased by Norwegian transportation company, Nor Lines AS. Rolls-Royce said this is its first order for vessels based on its Environship concept.

The company noted that the vessels will be built at Tsuji Heavy Industries ship yard in Jiangsu, China and will enter service from October 2013, operating along the West Coast of Norway. The ships' gas powered engines and innovative Promas propulsion system will increase fuel efficiency by 18 per cent, the company said. The use of gas fuelled engines will reduce Nitrogen Oxide emissions by about 90 percent while Sulphur Oxide emissions will be negligible.

CO2 emissions will be reduced by more than 40 percent compared to similar conventional vessels, Rolls-Royce stated.

Oddbjørn Eliassen, Rolls-Royce, President - Merchant said, "The Environship concept is a transformational development for merchant shipping, offering significant reductions in fuel burn and emissions, as well as enhanced performance at sea."
Rolls-Royce said it is already using the Environship concept to design various other ships, including passenger ferries, chemical tankers, gas tankers, bulk carriers, and superyachts.

The company said the contract is for two ships, and includes options to build an additional two vessels of the same design.
