Indian Navy commissions new stealth frigate

INS Satpura stealth frigate of the Indian Navy, was commissioned last weekend by Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Nirmal Verma. She is the second of the indigenous Shivalik (Project 17) Class of stealth frigates with the third ship, INS Sahyadri, presently in the final stages of construction at Mazgaon Docks Ltd, India. First of the Class, INS Shivalik, was commissioned in April last year.

Seven ships of the follow on Project 17A Class of a modified design were approved in July 2009.to be built by Mazagon and Garden Reach shipyards. This class of modern warship will significantly strengthen the fleet capabilities and increase the aspirations of the Indian Navy’s status as a blue water navy.

The Project 17 Class was jointly designed by the Naval Design Bureau (NDB) and Russia's Severnoye Project Design Bureau (SPKB). It is an enlarged and modified version of the Russian Talwar (Krivak III) Class frigate of which India has three, plus another three on order. DCNS, France has a consultancy regarding signature management.

There have been very long delays in completing these ships. The keels were laid in 2001, 2002 and 2003 yet the years of commissioning are 2010, 2011 and Dec 2011. Major delays occurred due to “political issues”surrounding the delivery of the GE gas turbines.

The Shivalik Class has an LOA of 470 ft (143 m), beam 56 ft (17 m) draft of 17.4 ft (5.3 m) and full load displacement of 5,300 t. Propulsion is a CODOG arrangement with two GE LM2500 gas turbines each of 22,000 hp (16.4 MW) and two Pielstick 16 PA6 STC diesels each of 7,600 hp (5,650 kW) driving CP propellers. The top speed is 32 kn, at 30 kn, the range is 1,600 nm on the gas turbines and at 18 kn the range is 4,500 nm on the diesels. The smaller Talwar Class uses four Zorya gas turbine in a COGAG arrangement with two FP propellers.
